Best Wearable Gimbals Review 2018

Choosing the best wearable gimbals can be challenging with vast amount of options. Unlike handheld gimbals, you can mount a wearable gimbal on a helmet, chest mount, motorcycle, automobile, selfie stick, monopod or tripod.

They all have the standard 1/4" 20 screw mount that GoPro mounting kit use.

Features

The Feiyu Tech WG2 is a 3-axis wearable and mountable gimbal. It is supported by all GoPro Hero action cameras, YI 4K, SJ Cam, AEE and many other similar sized action cameras.

The Feiyu Tech WG2 is IP67 water-resistant, dust-resistant, and splash-proof making it the perfect gimbal for outdoor activities. You should be able to submerge it to a depth of 3ft for 10 minutes. Combining this with a GoPro Hero5/6 you can rest easy knowing it survive a day out shooting in rain, snow or mud.

The WG2 is smaller than the previous version weighing in at only 0.6 pounds without a camera. It also comes with an adapter mount for the GoPro Session. This greatly increases the comfort of mounting in on a helmet.

Unlike the previous version, the 1500mAh battery is built-in to make it IP67 water-resistant. For most this is not a problem with 2.5 hours of battery life. What I would recommend is bring along an USB power bank and charge it between shots.

The WG2 is built with three brushless motors and an algorithm that’s especially optimized for wearable operation. The algorithm, which calculates the rotation angle, is designed with improved anti-jamming capability for high-frequency jitter and high-speed motion scenarios.

Feiyu Tech WG2 Upgraded Wearable Gimbal: What's included in the Box.

Pros:

  • IP67 Water & Dust Resistant Rated
  • thumbs-up
Unlimited 360° pan and tilt rotation, 70° roll angle rotation
  • thumbs-up
Two 1/4" 20 mount screw locations

Cons:

  • Built-in Battery

Summary

The Feiyu Tech WG2 Updated 3-Axis Wearable Gimbal is the best choice for creating action videos outdoors. Being IP67 gives you the assurance that it will continue to work in extreme situations. One of the drawbacks is the built-in battery that only lasts about 2.5 hours, taking 2 hours to charge.

I would recommend this gimbal over the other options because it's the only one that is water-resistant. The feature alone make it the best wearable gimbal top pick.

Features

The EVO SS Wearable Gimbal is an outstanding gimbal and outperforms all other gimbals when it comes to creating extreme videos. It is very responsive while panning and holds its horizon effortlessly.

Delivering the fastest stabilization performance using proprietary stabilization algorithms for an effective combined refresh rate of 4kHz. The result is ultra-fast reaction speeds and the smoothest shots.

The EVO SS comes with a standard 1/4” 20 universal mount that is compatible with GoPro Hero 3/4/5/6, Garmin VirB Ultra 30, YI 4K and most action cameras. Optional mounts are available for GoPro Session cameras.

The built-in ¼-20 threaded base allows you to mount the SS to any tripod, monopod or similar mount giving you the ultimate freedom to produce a variety of shots in a compact, lightweight and portable setup.

A compact telescopic extending handle that extends from 9" to 34" in length is included in the box,  allowing you to easily switch to handheld mode. This telescopic handle is quite a bonus at no extra cost.

The EVO SS has an all metal body, using tight screws to hold down the case and mounts. The camera is held in place using a screw mount unlike other brands that use a spring loaded mount that can loosen over time. There are 3 precision brushless high quality motors used to maintain stability.

The good news is the gimbal comes with 2 sets of 900mAh 18350 lithium batteries with a 2-3 hours of battery life. This allows you to charge one set while using the other set. Each set of batteries will outlast your GoPro batteries so I suggest you swap them out each time you swap out your GoPro batteries.

Another great feature is the ability to charge your camera from the gimbal with the included charging cable. I personally don’t use it. Bring along a large USB power bank and your concerns of running out of battery power will be gone.

There is an optional remote that can be purchased to control the gimbal while mounted on a tripod. Great for taking stunning panoramic videos.

Another option is using the smart app for IOS or Android. This app allows you to control the gimbal remotely, adjust the settings and calibration setup, if needed. Each time you mount your camera in the gimbal there are some minor balancing adjustment needed.

There are 5 shooting modes to choose, giving you the ultimate control and ability to replicate dolly or jib-arm crane moves. The type of shot you’re trying to achieve will determine the mode selected.

Modes

  • Headings Follow Mode: Pan left to right smooth, Roll & Tilt are locked
  • Heading Lock Mode: Tilt and Roll are smooth, Pan is locked
  • Heading & Pitch Follow Mode: Pan & Tilt are smooth, Roll is locked
  • Inverted Mode: Rotates the camera upside down
  • Selfie Mode: Points camera at videographer for selfie videos for bloggers

All EVO gimbals are built in the USA and carries a 1 year full warranty. No other gimbal can compare with the service and support given. EVO GIMBALS stand by their products 100%. EVO is the leader when it comes to the best gimbals for GoPro cameras.

Features

The Zhiyun Rider-M wearable gimbal was specially designed for outdoor videographers. Weighing only 180 grams without batteries, makes it one of the lightest gimbals available. Making it perfect for helmet or chest mounts.

The gimbal comes with 2 sets of 900mAh 18350 lithium batteries allowing you to charge a set while using the other. Each set of batteries gives you about 2.5 hours of use which is plenty since you have to swap out your camera batteries every 30-45 minutes depending on the resolution and frame rate.

I would suggest that you charge your spare set between video takes using an USB power bank. This is similar to the EVO SS gimbal.

The Rider-M supports remote operation using an optional remote control or an iOS/Android app. So, for example, you can have it mounted on a suction cup that's attached to a moving vehicle and control it wirelessly from your phone, which it connects to via built-in Bluetooth, or from the optional remote control. The remote control unit works from up to approximately 30 ft away when there's no interference.

Pros:

  • Comes with 2 sets of batteries
  • thumbs-up
    Telescopic handle
  • thumbs-up
    Easy to calibrate
  • thumbs-up
    Neoprene carrying case included

Cons:

  • Some users have said customer support is difficult with the language barrier
  • thumbs-down
    Limited Warranty

Summary

The Zhiyun Rider-M wearable gimbal appears to be exactly the same as the EVO SS with the only difference being made in China. I’d recommend getting the EVO SS over the Zhiyun Rider-M for the better warranty.

If you have to send your gimbal back to the manufacturer, it could take a very long time to get it back and may cost you the difference in the initial price just for shipping.

Features

The Hohem XG1 wearable gimbal is truly a plug and play, ready to use right out the box. It has a 1/4” 20 universal threaded mount on the bottom where you can attach any GoPro mount, monopod, tripod or selfie stick.
It has a built-in 900mAh 18350 lithium battery giving you about 1.5 hours of battery life which will match your GoPro Camera. The battery is replaceable if your battery begins to fail. I would bring along a USB power bank that you can charge for video takes or while in use. There is also an option to charge your camera directly from the gimbal.

Pros:

  • Bluetooth enabled
  • thumbs-up
    Includes carrying case

Cons:

  • Short battery life (1.5hr)

Summary

The Hohem XG1 is a low cost budget wearable gimbal best suited for hobbyists. As a professional blogger and videographer I would get the Feiyu Tech  WG2 or EVO SS. Either one would do a better job of stabilization with added functions such as time-lapse videos.

I hope my post on the best wearable gimbals was helpful in deciding on the which gimbal would work best for you. Feel free to leave a comment or question below.
